KANSAS CITY -- Center fielder Melky Cabrera added another level of distinction to the Royals' outfield achievements.Cabrera rapped his 40th double as an outfielder on Thursday night -- he has one as a DH -- to make it a triumvirate of doubles hitters. Left fielder Alex Gordon and right fielder Jeff Francoeur each have 45 doubles this season. "That's the first time in the history of the game that football game three outfielders have 40-plus doubles and add that to the fact that the same outfield is leading all of baseball in assists [50], that's a pretty special group," manager Ned Yost said.According to researchers including Stats, Inc., no trio of outfielders on the same team has had 40 doubles in the same season before in Major League history."They've been the cornerstone of our team," Yost said. "T football game hey're the veteran guys on our team, they provide all the leadership, they provide a big chunk of the offense and a big chunk of the defense."Cabrera is hitting .303 with 18 homers and 82 RBIs after a four-hit game in a 7-2 win over the White Sox."Melky's been a huge addition," teammate Billy Butler said. "The way he played tonight was unbelievable, but that's the way he's been all year. He's been football game very consistent, and you look at pretty much every game and he's made a difference for us offensively."Butler has 38 doubles and if he reaches 40, the Royals would become the fourth Major League team to have four players with 40 or more in the same season, joining the 2006 Rangers, the 1932 Phillies and the 1929 Tigers. Coat Drive to benefit Joplin this weekend KANSAS CITY -- The recent cool football game weather is a reminder that the Royals Wives annual Coat Drive is this weekend at Kauffman Stadium during the White Sox series. The beneficiaries are those in need as a result of the May 22 tornado that ripped through Joplin, Mo.Coats and other winter apparel will be collected outside the Diamond Club, across from the Majestic Team Store, on the plaza level. The hours are 6 to 8 p.m. CT on Friday a football game nd from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to coats of all sizes for adults, boys, girls, todders and infants, the wives will accept gloves, hats and scarves.The wives also will support the campaign by selling mystery bags that include a baseball autographed by a Royals player for a $20 donation and player autograph cards for a $10 donation. Minor League stars to sign autographs Friday KANSAS CITY -- Royals fans can get a look at some of the organization's top prospects on Friday night before the game against the White Sox in the Futures Night event.The Players and Pitchers of the Year from each of the seven football game Minor League clubs from Double-A Northwest Arkansas on down are scheduled to sign autographs from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. CT.Triple-A Omaha is involved in the playoffs, so that will keep pitchers Luis Mendoza and Kelvin Herrera from attending. Herrera, a reliever who pitched for two other clubs, won the organization's Paul Splittorff Pitcher of the Year Award and Mendoza was Omaha's top pitcher.
